Acknowledged as the scion of the Gwalior gharana, vocalist Meeta Pandit has emerged as a prominent star in the world of classical music. She is the granddaughter and disciple of Padma Bhushan Pt. Krishna Rao Shankar Pandit, a doyen of North Indian classical music in the 20th century, and the daughter and disciple of the legendary Pt. L. K. Pandit. She is the sixth of the unbroken Pandit line and is the first woman musician in the family. Her melodious and robust voice with a wide range of over three octaves has won her a broad following of music lovers. The rendering of traditional, but increasingly rare, tappa is one of the special offerings in her concerts. In addition to khyal, the predominant form of Hindustani vocal music today, and tappa, she is equally adept with taranas, bhajans, thumri, Sufi, and cross-cultural music. In 2008, she was awarded the highly prestigious 'Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar' of the Sangeet Natak Akademi given to promising artists under 35.
