Acknowledged as the scion of the Gwalior gharana, vocalist Meeta Pandit has emerged as a prominent star in the world of classical music. She is the granddaughter and disciple of Padma Bhushan Pt. Krishna Rao Shankar Pandit, a doyen of North Indian classical music in the 20th century, and the daughter and disciple of the legendary Pt. L. K. Pandit. She is the sixth of the unbroken Pandit line and is the first woman musician in the family. Her melodious and robust voice with a wide range of over three octaves has won her a broad following of music lovers. The rendering of traditional, but increasingly rare, tappa is one of the special offerings in her concerts. In addition to khyal, the predominant form of Hindustani vocal music today, and tappa, she is equally adept with taranas, bhajans, thumri, Sufi, and cross-cultural music. In 2008, she was awarded the highly prestigious 'Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar' of the Sangeet Natak Akademi given to promising artists under 35.
Dibyarka Chatterjee was born in Kolkata. Dibyarka is a young Tabla player from the Farrukhabad Gharana, and is the son and disciple of Pandit Samir Chatterjee. Having grown up in a musical environment his natural inclination towards Tabla became apparent early in his childhood. At the age of five he was initiated by his father into the ancient system of pedagogy called the guru-shishya parampara (master-disciple tradition).At the age of ten he moved to New York City with his family; since then he has continued to perform regularly with both Indian and Western music. Dibyarka has had the honor and privilege of performing with renowned musicians like Pandit Jasraj, Pdt. Budhhadev DasGupta, Pta. Lakshmi Shankar, Utd. Shujaat Khan, Utd. Mashkoor Ali Khan, Pdt. Ramesh Mishra, Pta. Shubhra Guha, Pta. Tripti Mukherjee, Pdt. Suman Ghosh to name only a few. He has collaborated in world music projects. Dibyarka is a part of the Arpan ensemble featuring some of finest musicians from the NY/NJ area.
He also teaches Tabla classes regularly at various institutions and locations in NY & NJ.
Dr. Nitin Damle, a biotechnology professional, is a self-taught harmonium player. He received his initiation in classical music from his mother, late Mrs. Jayashree Damle who had a big bhajan group in Pune. Nitin grew up in Pune listening to Marathi Natya-Sangeet which has a strong base of classical music. Over the last 30+ years, Nitin has accompanied on harmonium various artists in both North Indian classical music and ghazal concerts, on both coasts of the US.
