As the son of the famous singer Shrimati Aradhana Banerjee, Anindya Banerjee began his studies on the sarode in 1968 at the Ali Akbar College of Music in Kolkata. Among his teachers were Shri Dhyanesh Khan, Ustad Aashish Khan, Ustad Bahadur Khan and the late Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. Nowadays, he seizes every opportunity to receive advanced lessons of the sarode luminary Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in person. As an outstanding musician of the Maihar Gharana (the classical school that already generated Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Nikhil Banerjee), Anindya Banerjee plays no less than two instruments with virtuosity, which after all constitutes his uniqueness: the sursringar and the sarode. The sursringar (an instrument rarely used anymore) is often used by him in alaap (introduction to the Raga), enabling him to modulate in a better way the long meends (gliding tunes), which are substantial in some rare Ragas for the gradual unfoldment of the mood. He then purposefully employs the sarode for the more rapid passages and rhythmic patterns of the gat (main part of the Raga).http://www.raga.info/indian-music/musicians/Anindya-Banerjee.html
Samir Chatterjee began his studies early with Pandit Bankim Ghosh, Pt. Balaram Mukherjee, Pt. Rathin Dhar and Mohammad Salim. His later formation as a musician occurred under the guidance of Pt. Amalesh Chatterjee (since 1966) and Pt. Shyamal Bose (since 1984). All of Samir's teachers have been from the Farrukhabad Gharana (school) of Tabla-playing, which he now represents. http://www.tabla.org/samir.html

Lincoln Center “Out of Doors” Festival presents Brooklyn Qawwali Party and Susheela Raman by OuterIndia!
(Artists listed in order of appearance.)
1- Jazz-funksters Brooklyn Qawwaly Party deconstruct the
Sufi melodies of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for fans of adventurous improvisation.

2- Tamil Londoner Susheela Raman is a bewitching singer and incandescent performer equally at home with South Indian classical and folk music as with rock, soul, and jazz. This boundary-defying collaboration features musicians from India and the UK.
“I was born in London in 1973 to South Indian parents. My family moved to Australia when I was very young and were eager to keep our Tamil culture alive. I grew up singing South Indian classical music and began giving recitals at an early age. As a teenager I branched out into more blues-based music, which demanded quite different voice techniques. The question then was how to bring these streams together. In 1995 I went to India to study with Shruti Sadolikar, one of the greatest living Hindustani vocalists. This was a challenging experience as I had to let go of what I thought I knew and find a new, more insightful approach to my craft” Susheela http://www.susheelaraman.com/

Tuition $50/weekend; single class (2 hr) $30Chhandayan Center for Music presents a Semi-classical (upa-shastriya) Vocal Concert by Srimati Savita Devi.
Savita Devi is the daughter of renowned Vocalist Siddheshwari Devi. Siddheshwari Devi's music represented Banaras Gharana style, which lays more emphasis on the intensity of feelings and expression of emotions through musical notes and voice modulations. A stalwart of thumri, Siddheshwari's music also included khayals, dhrupads, dadras, tappas, kajris, chaitis, horis and bhajans. In thumris she specialized in "Poorabang" thumri, which is also known as the "Bol-Banav-ki thumri". Reliance on ragas was a distinctive feature of Siddheshwaris thumris. She helped in raising thumri to a classical form. She earned the title of "Thumri-Queen" and was presented the much coveted Padma Shree award in 1967. Siddheshwari Devi strongly believed in "Guru Shishya Parampara" which has been kept alive by her daughter Vidushi Savita Devi.
Savita established "Smt Siddheshwari Devi Academy of Indian Music" in the loving memory of her mother in 1977, the year in which Siddheshwari passed away. Savita Devi regularly broadcasts over radio and television. She has performed at numerous concerts in various parts of the country and abroad, which have won her wide acclaim. http://savitadevi.com/

D.T Joshi, and Pandit Vijay Kichlu. She has intelligently maintained the balance between the two streams of Khyal and Thumri, keeping intact all the academic excellance with measured blend of aesthetics and musical semantics. Open throated 'akar', her taans and bol-bants are extraordinary features of her gayaki. Her command over laya is outstanding. She is a regular artiste of the A.I.R and television and has given memorable performances all over India and abroad. www.subhraguha.net. Subhraji: subhraguha@yahoo.co.in.
