Neel Murgai – sitar
Sameer Gupta – drums, tabla
What better way to begin the New Year than by hearing Dr. Lonnie Smith premiere a brand new band at Jazz Standard! Yuga adi (“beginning of a new age”) is a traditional Hindi expression referring to the New Year, and it’s a fitting name for this unique Indian–influenced trio combining Hammond B-3 with sitar, tabla, and frame drum. Sitarist Neel Murgai has worked with a wide range of artists such as Wyclef Jean and Cyndi Lauper, and drummer/tabla player Sameer Gupta is a key force in Marc Cary’s Focus Trio. You’ve never heard Lonnie Smith music like this before, and we don’t know when you’ll get another chance – so make your reservations now!

Alwan for the Arts presents an evening of Indian Classical Sitar with
Ustad Ikhlaq Hussain Khan - Sitar
and featuring Dibyarka Chatterjee - Tabla
Maestro Hussain gave his first performance at age 14, in Karachi, and has been traveling the world performing ever since. Ustad Ikhlaq Hussain Khan is a virtuoso sitarist from a centuries-long line of influential musicians of the Delhi Gharana, dating back to the very creator of the instruments 'sitar' and 'tabla' in the early 13th century, Sufi Saint Hazrat Amir Khusrao. While his lineage is known for their proliferative work in the field of tabla and rhythmic expression/composition, Ikhlaq's grandfather, Ustad Ahmadi Khan, was the first to choose a different instrument, sarangi. In turn, Ikhlaq's father, the eminent Ustad Imdad Hussain, chose to devote his musical life to sitar. Ikhlaq's immediate family was relocated to Pakistan during partition, and still resides in Karachi.
A virtuoso sitarist from a centuries-long line of influential musicians of the Delhi Gharana, master sitarist Ustad Ikhlaq Hussain has followed in the footsteps of his forefathers, captivating audiences worldwide with his highly artistic sensibilities and skillful playing.
Listen to/watch maestro Hussain perform.
