East Indian Music Academy Presents "Swaranjali"

Indian Classical Concert featuring Hidayat Khan (Sitar) and Avirodh Sharma (Tabla).

Hidayat Hussain Khan comes from one of the greatest family of musicians. His forefathers have b...een the leaders and innovators of Classical Indian music. His great grandfather, Ustad Imdad Khan, co-developed the Surbahar" (bass Sitar). His grandfather, Ustad Enayat Khan was the foremost sitar player of his time. His father, Ustad Vilayat Khan (1928-2004), is attributed with many innovations and contributions, in the instrument as well as the playing of it. One of the highlights of Hidayat's performance is the melodic movements that completely replicates the human voice in the famous "gayaki ang", a trademark of their gharana.

Avirodh Sharma is one of the leading Tabla players from the West Indies promoting the tradition of rhythm. His ability to incorporate West Indian rhythmic elements on Tabla with Indian Classical melodic and percussive overtones make him extraordinary as a Tabla player and percussionist. His father, Pt. Ravideen Ramsamooj, founder of the East Indian Music Academy taught him Tabla. With his blessings, he has continued his journey with Tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain and Pt. Anindo Chatterjee. With Avirodh's vision, Globalstan is a global initiative promoting peace and harmony through the medium of world music.

MONDAY APRIL 30 @ 8:00 PM

Brooklyn Raga Massive "Jam Session" at Branded Saloon!

The American Jazz Jam session has historically been a way for musicians to meet, network, play music together and cultivate community. With the Brooklyn Raga Massive Jam Session, we are attempting to bring that Jazz culture to Raga music.

The Brooklyn Raga Massive Jam will be a monthly event, where Indian Classical Music can gather for informal performances in the Jazz Jam Session style. There will be a host for the event, who will manage a sign-up list which will have name, instrument, experience level, and contact info listed. Although Indian Classical Music typically has performances lasting 40+ minutes for one piece, the performance slots for the Raga Jam will be limited to max 20 minutes to encourage a rotating roster of performers.
