    SATURDAY MARCH 2 @ 6:00 PM

Rageshree Music Institute Proudly Presents An Evening Of Indian Classical Music!

    Pandit Kinaar Seen / Sitar

    Payal Seen / Vocal

    with Tasur Seen / Tabla

Kinaar Kumar Seen is the eldest son of the well-known musical authority Ustad Lachhman Singh Seen of the Punjab Gharana. He started learning music from his father at an early age in the traditional style of Punjab Gharana. He has been performing in major music festivals all over the world including the famous Harvallabh Sangeet Sammelan in India in 1979 and 1980. He has had numerous performances all over the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa and the West Indies. Kinaar Seen opened a branch of Sangeet Vilas, Kinaar School of Music with his wife Payal, an expert vocalist, in 1986. As a family, they collectively pass on their knowledge to many students in the Metropolitan-New York and Tri-state areas in a traditional Guru-shishya form.

Parminder Payal Seen's initial vocal training began with the steerage from Srimati Harsh Anand, who Payalji regards as the source of her insight and inspiration for music. Later she began schooling under the austere guidance of Guruji Satish Chander of Sham Churasi Gharana in the aesthetic and traditional training of Indian classical music. She continues to perform countless times both nationally and internationally. She has recorded numerous recognized pieces and has dabbled in blending music, dance, and Indian culture with western influences. She has recently directed a shabad recording of Melody and Majesty and collaborated with artist Rick Ramdehal in his recent album.

Tasur Seen -  is the grandson of Ustad Lachhman Singh Seen and son of Kinnar Seen of the Punjab Gharana. He started his tabla training under his grandfather and continued under his father.

Two of New York City's finest Italian musicians join forces to perform a folk-inspired set on violin and sitar as part of the Rubin Art Museum's Spiral Staircase Series. G.L.Diana is a sitar player based in New York. He lived in India for over 6 years, studying sitar and Dhrupad vocal style in Vrindavana, Uttar Pradesh. He has studied under the guidance of the world-renowned sitar master, Ustad Shahid Parvez.

    FRIDAY MARCH 15 @ 8:00pm

    Sitar Concert with  Ikhlaq Hussain.

    Nitin Mitta on tabla

at the New York Insight Meditation Center.

Including a short recital by two of his students, Liz Hogg and Jack Neustadt.

Ikhlaq Hussain Khan is a virtuoso sitarist from a centuries-long line of influential musicians of the Delhi Gharana, dating back to the very creator of the instruments 'sitar' and 'tabla' in the early 13th century, Sufi Saint Hazrat Amir Khusrao.
While his lineage is known for their proliferative work in the field of tabla and rhythmic expression/composition, Ikhlaq's grandfather, Ustad Ahmadi Khan, was the first to choose a different instrument, sarangi. In turn, Ikhlaq's father, the eminent Ustad Imdad Hussain, chose to devote his musical life to sitar. Ikhlaq's immediate family was relocated to Pakistan during partition, and still resides in Karachi. Ikhlaq Hussain, now a resident of New York City, was granted permanent residency in the U.S. on the basis of his extraordinary music ability; a category reserved for individuals with unusually exceptional talents. This has been a testimony to his virtuosity. Ikhlaq Hussain has followed in the footsteps of his forefathers, captivating audiences worldwide with his highly artistic sensibilities and skillful playing. Ikhlaq plays in the Gayaki Ang (or vocal manner of playing). It is perhaps the most difficult form of playing the sitar. It involves 'sytematic use of pitch deflecting technique, where by pulling the strings across the frets and varying their tension, the player can produce intricate melodie phrases from a single stroke of the plectrum. Thus, emulating the human voice to a degree normally unattainable on plucked instruments'.
