Udgam Presents Pandit  Nayan Ghosh , Sitar with his 12 year old son

Ishan Ghosh, Tabla In a rare Jugalbandi

Pandit Nayan Ghosh is acclaimed in India and around the world as one of India’s foremost musicians, with an unusual dimension – the only maestro with superlative command on two diverse instruments the Sitar and the Tabla.  Pandit  Ghosh is held as an important reference source for a whole new generation of music seekers.  Son and disciple of the 20th century Tabla wizard Nikhil Ghosh and nephew of Pannalal Ghosh, “the Father of Indian Classical Flute”, Nayan has inherited the rich and learned legacy and carries it with dignity and grace.  Artistic brilliance, rich repertoire and a magnificence of tone are his hallmarks. His sitar recitals sparkle with intense melodiousness and rich delineations, bringing out the depth and the true spirit of the raga. His judicious balance of the gayaki (vocalization) and the tantrakari (instrumentation) elements reveal his unswerving focus on musical form and beauty. His formidable tabla solos drawn from an enviable repertoire of the Farukhabad, Delhi, Ajrada, Lucknow and Punjab schools and his eloquent and mesmerising accompaniments have won him a strong stamp of recognition as a blue-blooded tabla player.

Eric Fraser will be leading a sound meditation workshop.

All levels of musicians welcome, no prior experience necessary.

A hidden treasure in the great path of yoga is a special practice known as "Nada Yoga," the yoga of sound. Nada yoga uses sound, music, voice, breath and rhythm as a vehicle to meditation and purification of the nadis (subtle and vast web of energy channels and nerve passageways in the body). Indian classical music and its ancient tradition of Ragas (sacred scales) is a classical mode for practicing Nada Yoga. While meditating on the tones in different ragas, amazing transformations can happen. This workshop is part of the Music Therapy Restorative Workshop series at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. www.ericfraser.com

SNEHASISH MOZUMDER - Mandolin and SOM at Rockwwod Music Hall Mainstage!     An evening of Jazz and North Indian Styles...

Sharing the Night with DUB TRIO.... What an enjoyable evening in NYC this could be!
    Venue: Rockwwod Music Hall
    196 Allen St New York, NY 10002 - (212) 477-4155
    www.rockwoodmusichall.com/

Maestro SNEHASISH MOZUMDER (Double Neck Mandolin) and his band Sound of Mandolin (SOM) set a swingin’ sax line intertwining with impassioned string melodies in a blend of North Indian classical music and jazz. A double-necked mandolin—Mozumder’s own creation—rings with ragas as forceful jazz rhythms surge or mystical harmonies evoke otherworldly experiences before breaking into propulsive fusion. Sitting in with Ravi Shankar’s band for the Concert for George in 2002 was a career highlight, and since then Mozumder has performed on the Lincoln Center Out of Doors series, played here with Subrata Bhattacharya in 2009, and released a recording made with his band at New York City’s incomparable Blue Note. Conjuring memories of Shakti in a night-long jam, Mozumder and Sound of Mandolin will mesmerize and energize.

    SUNDAY APRIL 28

An East meets West Musical Creative Workshop & Concert, featuring saxophonist/flutist Premik Russell Tubbs & tabla master Naren Budhakar:
An East meets West Musical Creative Workshop & Concert, featuring saxophonist/flutist Premik Russell Tubbs & tabla master Naren
    Budhakar:

In this workshop/concert, our goal is to share with the audience our personal backgrounds, growing up in 2 different parts of the world, and in 2 entirely different musical cultures, and then describe how these cultures (and ourselves as players) have come together over the years to form a unique collaboration of styles, what one reviewer describes as "a deliciously spicy world music soup". We will be performing various musical selections, both improvised & composed, as well as inviting the audience to participate in some fun counting exercises to show how the rhythms of the East can prove to be a challenge even to the best musicians in the West! This concert/workshop is open to everyone: you don't need to be a skilled musician to enjoy and participate!

NAREN BUDHAKAR'S tabla performances represent the East-West diaspora of Indian classical music. Born into a musical lineage in India, he began performing at a young age for schools, colleges and radio. After moving to the U.S., he performed with great maestros of dance, instrumental and vocal music. He has also performed with various genres including jazz, Irish Celtic and rock music including an improvisational duo with Bobby McFerrin. Naren has performed at many prestigious venues such as City Center, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Kennedy Center. In 2012 He was cited by the New York Times for his percussion work with Alvin Ailey, the acclaimed dance company.

Premik Russell Tubbs, a composer, arranger, producer and an accomplished multi-instrumentalist performs on various flutes, soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, wind synthesizers, and lap steel guitar. He has performed at the last 3 Rainforest Foundation concerts at Carnegie Hall hosted by Sting & Trudie Styler where he backed up such artists as Bruce Springsteen, Bruno Mars, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Elton John & Lady GaGa, just to name a few. Premik, in conjunction with jazz pianist Uli Geissendoerfer heads Bangalore Breakdown, an exciting, world music ensemble. In 2004, Premik had released his own album, Mission Transcendence, a soulful melding of East /West, jazz and world styles. Previous solo releases include Transformation-Dawn, Run to Tomorrow's Sun, A New World of Peace and Endless Energy, Sleepless Speed. Premik has also toured and/or recorded with Carlos Santana, Whitney Houston, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Ravi Shankar and many others. He is equally adept in pop, R&B, jazz, world and experimental genres.

    TUESDAY APRIL 30 @ 9:00 PM

    Akshara at Cornelia Street Cafe!

Akshara is an exciting new percussion group rooted in Indian classical musical traditions. Comprised of virtuosic performers in Carnatic and Hindustani classical genres, Akshara performs an energetic blend of classical Indian melody and rhythm highlighted with solo and scale-based improvisations.

The group performs original compositions demonstrating the powerful and complex rhythmic structures inherent in South Indian classical music. The leading instrument is Mridangam, a double-barreled drum that produces a deep rich tone and played with both hands to highly complex rhythmic patterns. Other percussion instruments include the Tabla, the main North Indian percussion instrument, the Kanjira, a tambourine-like instrument with a bass tone and Morsing, an Indian version of the Jew's Harp. A unique feature is the use of vocal percussion, or Konnakkol within the compositions. Melodic accompaniment is provided using Carnatic Violin and Cello.
