6th Annual Concert of East Indian Classical Ragas:

Lee Torchia - Voice and Tambura

    Polash Gomes on Tabla

Lee Torchia will give a free raga concert to celebrate the birthday of her guru, Pandit Pran Nath (Nov 3, 1918 - June 13, 1996), the acknowledged Master of Kirana Gharana.  During her 20-year discipleship, Lee traveled often with him to India and performed and taught with him in Paris.  She also studied with his disciples, La Monte Young and Terry Riley, who are among the highest authorities of the American Minimalist and Microtonal tradition.
Kirana gharana focuses on the alap, the slow unfolding of the precise pitches of the raga to connect the breath to the Divine. Lee has performed solo Hindustani Classical Vocal concerts in the traditional Indian style at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, Pace University, Pratt Institute, Penn State Scranton and Schuylkill, and others as well as ashrams and spiritual sites in India. She was adjunct faculty at the New School University Jazz Department in New York City, and continues to perform, lecture and teach raga singing.  Lee accompanies herself with the traditional string drone instrument, the tambura.   http://www.jazzraga.com/itinerary

Namdhari Sikh Religious & Cultural Society of New York presents the  talented sitar virtuoso Shakir Khan (son of maestro Ud. Shahid Parvez Khan) in Concert!
Accompanied on tabla by Amit Kavthekar.

Shakir Khan  is acclaimed as one of the most sensitive and dynamic young classical sitar players internationally, energetically following in the musical footsteps of his prodigious father and Guru -- the sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan. Like his father, Shakir Khan stands out for his exquisite melodic exposition, his intricate and sophisticated sense of rhythm, and his astonishing flawless instrumental technique. Shakir represents the eighth generational link in an unbroken chain of musical talent and tradition poured exclusively into the sitar and surbahar. A chain that includes, besides his father, the musical legacy of Ustad Aziz Khan (Shakir’s paternal grandfather), and that of the patriarchal surbaharist Ustad Wahid Khan (Shakir’s great grandfather). He is also a close blood relative of the great sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan.

Amit Kavthekar, Ganda-Bandha Shagird of Ustad Allarakha, has rhythm running in his veins began his training with the legend at the early age of six. Since 1991, he was fortunate to be taught tabla intricacies by inimitable Ustad Zakir Hussain. Amit had his basic training in tabla from Shri Ashok Godbole, at the Allarakha Institute of Music. From 1997 to 2003, Deepak Nerurkar, another brilliant tabla maestro, imparted his art to Amit.  Recently awarded the Taal Mani by Sur Singar Sansad, Amit is presently learning intricacies of DelhiGharana from Guru Pandit Sudhir Mainkar.

    SUNDAY NOVEMBER 4 @ 11:59PM

Shruti Laya cordially invites you to participate in the Sanskrit Compositions Day festival on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: SUNDAY NOVEMBER 4 @ 11:59PM.

Shruti Laya has been following a tradition of celebrating a different composer each year. This year, we decided to focus on compositions in Sanskrit, rather than a specific composer. In order to bring out a wide selection of lesser known krithis, and ensure that these are taught to our children, we are restricting this festival to Non Trinity compositions.

All students of music and dance to perform in groups are invited. Performances will be grouped by the teacher, so please contact your teacher and have her or him contact Shruti Laya with details of the participants. Artists and teachers in our area are also invited to participate on their own. In order to defray some of the costs of this program, there will be a Five Dollar participation fee per participant. This is the chance for all our young artists to sing or perform on stage, and show their skills. Due to the expected large turnout, group performances are preferred. Shruti Laya will work with the area music and dance teachers, so please contact your teacher if you want to participate. If you are a music or dance teacher and would like your students to participate (or if you are an artist and would like to participate yourself), please contact us at sanskrit@shrutilaya.org.

In addition to the student groups, Shruti Laya plans to have a grand musical concert or dance performance at the end of the day.

    Sitar Concert with Ikhlaq Hussain.

Ustad Ikhlaq Hussain Khan is a virtuoso sitarist from a centuries-long line of influential musicians of the Delhi Gharana, dating back to the very creator of the instruments 'sitar' and 'tabla' in the early 13th century, Sufi Saint Hazrat Amir Khusrao.
While his lineage is known for their proliferative work in the field of tabla and rhythmic expression/composition, Ikhlaq's grandfather, Ustad Ahmadi Khan, was the first to choose a different instrument, sarangi. In turn, Ikhlaq's father, the eminent Ustad Imdad Hussain, chose to devote his musical life to sitar. Ikhlaq's immediate family was relocated to Pakistan during partition, and still resides in Karachi.
Ikhlaq Hussain, now resides in New York City,
