OPEN VOICE - An 8-session course with Samita Sinha
What does it mean to have an open and embodied voice? We begin with a ground in Indian vocal music and folk and ritual (vibratory) songs from different traditions, and open into an improvisation practice where we excavate the range and possibilities of our human voice.
Our study of Hindustani (North Indian classical) vocal music will focus on pitch, deep listening as a basis for sounding, and two ragas--melodic modes that provide frameworks for composition and improvisation. Through vibratory songs we will organically learn basic elements of vocal music, becoming channels for the songs to move through us. From this base we unlock our individual body-sound, using our voice to explore our internal movements and blocks and discovering an elemental, primal way of sounding.
This workshop is open not only to singers and movers but anyone with a curiosity to explore their voice and body as a vehicle to connect with themselves and others, and the space within and around them.

Indian Carnatic Singer Vidushi Bombay Jayashri makes Rare NY Concert appearance:Oscar Nominated Performer from "Life of Pi", plays Carnegie Hall!
Presented by Bhoomija
Co-Promoted by HarmoNYom
Accompanied by:
- H N Bhaskar - Violin
- Satish Kumar Patri - Mridingam
- Giridhar Udupa - Ghatam
Trained by the Indian violin maestro Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, Bombay Jayashri represents an emerging generation of musicians. While classically trained and established in the core tradition of her chosen genre of Carnatic music, she has proven herself to be at equal ease performing less traditional works such as the Oscar-nominated Pi's Lullaby, or improvising with a 100-piece symphony orchestra from Finland. In the conservative world of Indian classical music, Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman was very open to other sounds, listening from Western classical virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin to Scottish folk. And that openness is something Jayashri has carried into her own career, whether singing the pure Carnatic music of South India that’s deep in her heart, collaborating with a Finnish orchestra, or being nominated for an Academy Award for writing and performing “Pi’s Lullaby” in the movieLife of Pi. Jayaraman’s star student now shines brightly and has become an international star in her own right. She’s appeared all over the globe, most recently spending time in China. Bombay Jayashri has done plenty of groundbreaking work on her own, too. Her performance, Listening to Life, showcases her ability to move seamlessly between Carnatic and Hindustani classic music, film and light music, singing in various languages—Sanskrit, Telugu, Urdu, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi and Tamil— weaving everything together in a single narrative illustrating her love of music. That passion for music is what she’ll bring to her appearance atNew York’s Carnegie Hall on October 20!

Deep Singh for an innovative musical performance emphasizing both tradition and modernity. Kurosawa’s solo virtuosity, featured for the first half of the concert, will then be accented with the echoing, sharp tones of Singh’s Indian tabla.
Yumi Kurosawa began her training on the Koto at age three. She has since toured extensively worldwide, receiving multiple awards for her music, including first prize at the Japanese National Koto Competition in 1989 and a scholarship from the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan in 1998. Since her arrival in New York City in 2002, Kurosawa has performed in such venues as the Blue Note Jazz Club and Carnegie Hall, and her innovative, seamless blending of traditional Japanese music with elements of modern Jazz and electronica has been praised by The New York Times and the Washington Post.
From an early age, tabla, percussion, and voice virtuoso Deep Singh was immersed in music. After initially being taught both vocals and the harmonium by his father, Singh became a disciple of the Punjab Gharana under Padma Shree Ustad Allah Rakha Khan, eventually becoming one of the senior guru-brothers of the tabla master Ustad Zakir Hussain.

Suphala is one of the most versatile young tabla artists making music today. Raised in the U.S. by Indian parents, Suphala began learning western classical music on the piano at age four, performing at age five, and as a teenager transferred her passion to one of the world’s most complex percussion instruments: the tabla. She combines an unparalleled technical command of her instrument with a playful sense of experimentation as she switches effortlessly between composing, producing and performing.
Suphala is a protégé of the great tabla masters Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain, whose constant inspiration compels her not only to dedicate herself to the study of Indian classical music but also to extend the reach of the tabla into an ever-growing variety of musical genres and cultural contexts. Her fluency in a diversity of musical traditions informs her unique compositions and her highly improvisational performances. (Photo by Gerard Gentil)

TUESDAY OCTOBER 29 @ 7:00 PM
In continuation of the raga singing studies we began this year with Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, Golden Drum is proud to present Raga Singing Classes with Sri Sandip Bhattacharjee.
Sandip is one of the few prodigies to have lived up to his initial promise. Born in a family with a deep rooted musical background, Sandip was initiated into music by his mother Smt. Krishna Bhattacharjee at the age of four and he continued his talim under Smt. Amita Dasgupta later.
When in his teens, Sandip became a residential scholar at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy under the able Guidance of Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan & Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan, sons and disciples of the legendary Sarangi Maestro late Padmashree Ustad Shakoor Khan. It was essentially here that Sandip was nurtured in the true guru shishya parampara system of training of the Kirana Gharana . Now he is a senior musician scholar at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Tollygunge, Kolkata.
Along with his music, Sandip also holds a First class degree in Graduation from Rabindra Bharati University (Kolkata), in classical music. Other than pure classical music he is competent in singing semi classical forms like Bhajans, ghazals and Nazrulgeeti as well.
Sandip has been a faculty at AAICM in New York since 2013.
