An evening of Ghazals and Indian Music with
Minoo Purushottam!
Minoo Purushottam, a name which is indelibly linked with
Indian Music, entered the film world at a tender age of sixteen. As a tyro, Minoo took her first lesson in Classical Vocal Music from Pandit Laxman Prasad Jaipurwalle, a well-known personality in the world of classical music. Born in an agriculturist family of Patiala (Punjab), she acquired Bisharad (Bachelor of Arts degree) in music from an international city, Bombay, India.
Indian music was rapidly growing as a bridge towards world peace and friendship and at such a time, Minoo too burgeoned in her favourite field. Sri Sahir Ludhianvi, one of the greatest poets and well known music director Sri Roshan appreciated her talent and zeal and introduced her in Hindi films. 'Taj Mahal' which is one of the top musical films of India was the film where Minoo made her debut. King of Ghazals, music director Sri Madan Mohan, a cognoscente in special style of ghazal singing imparted his profound knowledge of music to Minoo. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1264025/bio

World Music Institute, celebrating its 25th season,
presents captivating traditions from the heart of the Indian desert with the New York debut of Rhythm of Rajasthan – Desert Caravan in a program of music and dance.
Rhythm of Rajasthan is comprised of renowned artists who have toured throughout the world. The ensemble was formed in 2007 by Nitin Nath Harsh, who began his career in folklore with the late legendary folklorist Padma Bhusan Komal Kothari. The group performed at the 1st Rajasthan International Folk Festival, the India Festival in Amsterdam organized by the Concertgebow, and the 2nd International Sufi Music Festival in Amman, Jordan.
Rajasthan, the “land of kings” in northwestern India and home of the Great Thar Desert, has one of the liveliest folk traditions in India. The musicians in Rhythm of Rajasthan, from the Langa (“song giver”) and Manghaniyar hereditary groups of itinerant entertainers, perform vibrant and joyous folk music encompassing driving percussion, ecstatic Sufi songs, and hypnotic sarangi (bowed lute) and algoza (double flute). Though both communities are made up of Muslim musicians, many of their songs are in praise of Hindu deities and celebrate Hindu festivals such as Diwali and Holi.
They are joined by the famed Suva Devi, a dancer in Tony Gatlif's film Latcho Drom, who performs the sensuous Kalbeliya Sapera snake-charming dance and the spectacular Bhavai folk dance.
This program is the closing concert of the 5th New York Gypsy Festival (www.nygypsyfest.com).
