The music ranges from diverse gharanas (traditions) in Hindustani (North Indian) vocal and sitar music.

Each concert is preceded by a talk with Indian music specialists curated by author Kavita Das about the evolution of female artists in Indian music.

This series also marks the firstcollaboration between HarmoNYom, a leading organization that supports and promotes classical Indian music in the metropolitan area, and Robert Browning Associates, the new organization led by Mr. Browning who has been involved in presenting more than 2000 artists in New York since 1976, including over 200 Indian musicians and dancers.

HarmoNYom, founded by Veronique Lerebours in 2008, is a leading organization filling a crucial role in supporting and promoting Indian classical music in New York. In efforts to build alliances with global communities and create more opportunities for artists, HarmoNYom seeks to serve as a “Voice” and platform for the world-renowned South Asian classical maestros, as well as the emerging and rising talents - a platform where musicians can bring forth enhanced exposure, awareness and appreciation of the rich Indian classical music legacy.... Robert Browning Associates continues the programming initiated by the founders of the music programming at the Alternative Center for International Arts (Alternative Museum) from 1976 to 1985 and the World Music Institute from 1985 to 2011. In addition to a concert series at Roulette, current activities include curating World Views, a series presented at Zankel Hall by Carnegie Hall in partnership with Robert Browning Associates. www.robertbrowningassociates.com
Kavita Das (Curator of the pre-concert talks) worked in the social change sector for fifteen years on issues ranging from homelessness, to public health disparities, to most recently, racial justice. She now focuses on writing nonfiction and creative nonfiction and her work has been published in several literary and journalistic outlets. Kavita is currently at work on a biography about Lakshmi Shankar, a Grammy-nominated Hindustani singer who played a key role in the movement that brought Indian music to the West in the late 1960s. Relatedly, she’s published several articles about Lakshmi Shankar in Colorlines,Smithsonian Indian American Heritage Project blog and The Aerogram. A Celebration of Women in Indian Classical Music!
Women’s Voices Festival, taking place in October at the intimate Saint Peter’s Church, is an innovative new series that celebrates the current role of women in classical Indian music – an illuminating art that has been male-dominated for centuries.
The series features:
Soulful Roopa Panesar (October 4), rising young sitar star in the UK's Indian music scene who will be making her New York debut; Gurdain Rayatt - Tabla
Special Guest: Yogi Trivedi
Hindustani vocal master Meeta Pandit (October 10), who has the distinction of being the first female musician in her famous musical family. Dibyarka Chatterjee - Tabla & Nitin Damle - Harmonium
Special Guest: Francesca Cassio, PHD
Versatile sitarist Anupama Bhagwat (October 17), one of the worldwide leading female instrumentalists in the gayaki (vocal) style; Nitin Mitta - Tabla
