SATURDAY FEBRUARY 21, 8PM
Kiran Ahluwalia- CD release concert Feb 21 at Roulette, Brooklyn
Born in India, raised in Canada, and based in New York City, this singer has been playing Indian classical and folk songs since she was in elementary school. While in New York, she met the noted guitarist Rez Abbasi, who is a native of Pakistan and grew up in California. Now married, they are potent musical collaborators. Abbasi produced Ahluwalia’s new album, “Sanata: Stillness,” weaving a ringing electric-guitar tapestry throughout it.
They’ll be joined in concert by Nitin Mitta, on tabla, Will Holshouser, on accordion, and Nikku Nayar, on electric bass. Expect a vibrant, stirring amalgam of Eastern, Western, and African modalities and rhythms.
Roulette, 509 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn, NY

US DEBUT!
Rajasthani Songs from the Desert of Pakistan:
Mai Dhai Ensemble
presented by Live@365
This concert marks a rare opportunity to hear Rajasthani music from Pakistan with Mai Dhai, a traditional Manganiyar singer and dhol player from the Thar Desert region. Hailing from Tharparkar, in the interior region of Sindh province, Mai Dhai’s driving percussion and other-worldly voice evoke the ancient rhythms of times long past.
The Manganiyars are a caste of Muslim musicians who traditionally performed for the kings of Rajasthan in the subcontinent. Their repertoire ranges from ballads about the kings to Sufi songs written by various mystics as well as songs for occasions such as birth, marriage, rains, and feasts.
