OPEN VOICE - A session course with Samita Sinha
What does it mean to have an open and embodied voice? We begin with a ground in Indian vocal music and folk and ritual (vibratory) songs from different traditions, and open into an improvisation practice where we excavate the range and possibilities of our human voice.
Our study of Hindustani (North Indian classical) vocal music will focus on pitch, deep listening as a basis for sounding, and two ragas--melodic modes that provide frameworks for composition and improvisation. Through vibratory songs we will organically learn basic elements of vocal music, becoming channels for the songs to move through us. From this base we unlock our individual body-sound, using our voice to explore our internal movements and blocks and discovering an elemental, primal way of sounding.
This workshop is open not only to singers and movers but anyone with a curiosity to explore their voice and body as a vehicle to connect with themselves and others, and the space within and around them.

Shruti Laya presents: Telugu Compositions Day.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: NOV. 14, 2013
Shruti Laya cordially invites you to participate in the Telugu Compositions Day festival on Saturday, Dec.14, 2013. Following the hugely successful tradition of Shruti Laya Composers Days (Annamacharya Day in 2008, Purandaradasa Day in 2009 and Papanasam Sivan Day in 2010, and Swathi Thirunal Day in 2011, Sanskrit Day 2012), Shruti Laya is planning another composers day this year.
Grand Violin Concert by Smt. Lalitha (of the Lalitha & Nandini duo). There will also be three mini vocal concerts by upcoming young artists in their area.
Continuing the process begun last year of focusing on one language, this year's event will be dedicated to compositions in TELUGU. To continue to encourage students to learn new compositions, we will be focusing on compositions other than Trinity, Annamacharya and Swathi Thirunal. All students of music and dance are invited to perform in groups. Performances will be grouped by the teacher, so please contact your teacher immediately and have her or him contact Shruti Laya with details of the participants. Artists and teachers in our area are also invited to participate on their own. In order to defray some of the costs of this program, there will be a Five Dollar participation fee per participant. In addition to the student groups, we also plan to have a grand musical concert or dance performance at the end of the day. http://www.shrutilaya.org/events/2013-12-14-telugu/index.html
